ICEYE US History
We draw upon the industry’s legacy to maintain American dominance in space.
Our story, now written over a decade, is as much a tale of the road less traveled as it is a celebration of allied collaboration. Our journey intertwines Nordic and American technology, investment, and mentorship for mutually beneficial economic, scientific and defense outcomes realized on both sides of the Atlantic.
Having invented the first commercial synthetic aperture radar microsatellite in 2012, we envisioned operations in the United States with a clear mission: deliver world-leading remote sensing capabilities for the future of proliferated space missions built, launched, and operated on American soil, by American citizens, for American interests. In 2018, responding to the Department of Commerce's long-standing policy encouraging aerospace companies to establish significant domestic operations, ICEYE US was founded in California as a strategic commitment to American space leadership.
In the early 2010s, we developed a bold vision: make radar sensing technology accessible to the United States and its allies via small, agile, software defined satellites as opposed to monolithic, cost prohibitive platforms. As a byproduct, enable governments to better leverage commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) capabilities to complement inherently governmental needs. What started as a university project became a revolution in remote sensing.

With vertical integration across hardware and software layers, we maintain the highest commercial SAR micro-satellite production rate in the world.
